Calm afternoon to lead to cold and windy evening in Gillette today

GILLETTE, Wyo. — The Gillette area is finally getting a break from frequent and unpredictable snow showers and strong winds, even if just for an afternoon. Today will be sunny and warm, featuring relatively calm winds before a very cold evening.

While a high of 46 degrees might not technically be considered warm, it is indicative of Gillette’s slow transition to spring, as other days this past week were even more unpleasant. Also noteworthy are 5–9 mph winds — practically nothing to Wyoming residents.

Tonight will see the return of rain before 9 p.m., then a gradual transition to snow after 10. Temps tonight will fall to around 24 degrees, but windchill values associated with 15–20 mph winds that will pick up later in the evening could make it feel as cold as 12 degrees. Winds could peak at 28 mph. In total, less than an inch of new snow is expected to fall in Gillette tonight.

A chance of snow will continue into Friday morning, when there is a 20% chance before noon. No substantial accumulation is expected on Friday, however. Additionally, winds will be strong Friday at about 16–21 mph and could make the area feel as cold as 11 degrees, even if the high is 32.

Friday night itself will also be somewhat cold and windy. The evening’s low will be 19, but will again feature relatively strong winds that could peak at 20 mph.

By Saturday, a gradual warming trend will take hold on the area and, according to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota, last through at least Wednesday next week. See the detailed forecast below for more information.
