Slight chance of showers today; heavier snowfall to arrive tomorrow night

GILLETTE, Wyo. — A series of incoming weather systems will bring lots of precipitation to the Campbell County area this week, with the chief among them arriving tomorrow night. As for today, there is just a 20% chance of precipitation.

That will most likely occur after 4 p.m. in Gillette and will come with a slight chance of thunderstorms. Today’s high will be 50 degrees, though strong southward winds blowing at 11–17 mph and occasionally at up to 24 mph may make it feel more like 20 degrees.

Tonight’s probable showers will last through midnight and return at around 3 a.m. Tuesday. Tonight will be around 33 degrees with 9–14 mph wind gusts.

Those showers will persist through noon Tuesday before turning to just snow from noon to 1 p.m. After 1 p.m., the National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota, predicts precipitation will return to a pure liquid form. In total, the day Tuesday will have a 50% chance of precipitation and should only be slightly cooler than today, with a high of 45 degrees.

Tuesday night is when the most disruptive weather system is forecast to arrive. The NWS in Rapid City predicts that, just through the end of Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, 1–2 inches of snow accumulation will fall. Snowfall later Wednesday could stack up as high as an additional 3 inches, meaning that Gillette could see somewhere between 2–5 inches of snowfall in a 24-hour period in the coming days.

Temps Tuesday night and Wednesday will also be noticeably cooler than other days this week as well. While snow is certainly not leaving the forecast for Gillette anytime soon this week, conditions should at least feel somewhat warmer and be at least a little less snowy through this coming Sunday. See the detailed forecast below for more information.
