City of Gillette declares Level I Snow Emergency for March 18

GILLETTE, Wyo. — The City of Gillette has declared a Level 1 Snow Emergency ahead of an approaching winter storm that could bring as much as 10 inches of snow to the area later tonight. 

According to the city, the declaration means all vehicles need to be removed from designated snow removal routes by 8 a.m. Tuesday, March 18. There are no travel restrictions or advisories under the emergency declaration. 

The following areas are designated as Snow Emergency Routes:

  • 6th Street from Burma Avenue to Gillette Avenue
  • 4th Street from 4-J Road to Gurley Avenue
  • Gurley Avenue from 12th Street to 4th Street
  • 4-J Road from 2nd Street to 8th Street
  • Brooks Avenue from 2nd Street to Warlow Drive
  • 9th Street from Butler Spaeth Road to Highway 59
  • Foothills Boulevard from Highway 14-16 to Echeta Road
  • 7th Street from Highway 59 to 4-J Road

The city announcement comes ahead of a winter storm that is forecast to bring heavy snow and strong winds to Gillette and the surrounding region. 

According to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota, snow accumulations between 5 and 10 inches are expected with higher amounts possible and wind gusts of up to 35 mph. 

The NWS in Rapid City’s winter storm warning encompasses Gillette, Rozet, Moorcroft, Pine Haven, Keyhole Reservoir, Devils Tower, Hulett, Beulah, Weston, Recluse, Colony and Aladdin. It also includes Whitewood, Spearfish and Saint Onge in South Dakota. 

Per the NWS in Rapid City, travel could be very difficult during the approaching storm, and hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday morning and evening commutes. For residents who must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
