Winds picking up across Campbell County; fire chances increased

GILLETTE, Wyo. — As the week goes on, daily temps in the Gillette area are rising in concert with wind speeds. Those higher temps and fast winds prompted the National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota, to issue a warning for northeast Wyoming regarding an increase in the chance of grass fires igniting and spreading.

That warning will be in effect through Thursday, when another system will bring fresh precipitation to batter the area with. That will bleed into Friday as well.

Until then, today will see a high of 63 degrees with 8–13 mph winds and gusts as high as 22 mph. Tonight’s low will fall only to an estimated 39 degrees. The wind will not be going anywhere, though.

Tomorrow is likely the day this week that presents the largest risk of spreading fires, as winds are going to pick up to 22–26 mph all day. The occasional gust could reach as high as 40 mph. Tomorrow’s high will be 63 degrees.

And then there comes snow. Winds will still blow similarly hard on Friday, but added precipitation will make the hazardous weather outlook no longer necessary.
