GILLETTE, Wyo. — An investigation is underway into a woman’s reported death at the Legacy Living & Rehabilitation Center, the Gillette Police Department confirmed on Thursday.
According to a Jan. 16 statement, officers responded to The Legacy around 4:10 a.m. Jan. 10 after receiving a report of an 88-year-old woman found deceased outside on the property.
Outside of confirming an active investigation, the statement says the City of Gillette will not release additional information at this time.
The statement comes on the heels of online speculation where a Facebook user declared that the woman froze to death outside The Legacy and called for accountability. Other users asserted the woman had been missing anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours before she was found.
Gillette Deputy Police Chief Brent Wasson did not say whether the woman froze to death — only that her death remains an active investigation.
When asked whether an autopsy will be performed to determine an official cause of death, Campbell County Coroner Paul Wallem declined to comment beyond confirming an active investigation.
