Gillette police locate, arrest woman wanted as escapee

(Ryan Lewallen/County 17)

GILLETTE, Wyo. — A woman wanted as an escapee for failing to return from temporary release nearly three weeks ago was located and arrested at a local hotel Wednesday morning, Gillette Deputy Police Chief Brent Wasson said.

Tayla McGrady, 32, was wanted as an escapee from official detention after allegedly failing to return to the Campbell County Detention Center after being granted temporary medical release on Dec. 19.

According to Wasson, Gillette police officers located McGrady after discovering a vehicle once associated with her in the parking lot of the National 9 Inn on Highway 14-16 around 1:09 a.m. Jan. 8.

Wasson said the vehicle was occupied by a 28-year-old man who initially denied knowing McGrady’s whereabouts; however, he admitted she was in a room after they requested permission to look for her. The report did not specify their relationship or why she was with him.

Officers found McGrady in the room and arrested her for conditional release revocation as well as a warrant for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and transported her back to the detention center, per Wasson.

At the time of her temporary release, McGrady was being held on charges consisting of bond revocation, child endangerment and drug possession. Her release was granted by District Court Judge Michael J. McGrady for a doctor’s appointment, according to Sheriff Scott Matheny.

Following her release on Dec. 19, McGrady was supposed to return to the detention center by 4 p.m. but failed to do so. Information at the time indicated she may have been heading for Arizona, Matheny previously said.
