Gillette, Campbell County to see continued snow flurries, midweek warmup

(Dan Cepeda, Oil City File)

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Gillette and Campbell County can expect continued periods of light snow and flurries today as a cold snap grips the region.

A weak shortwave moving through northeastern Wyoming is bringing persistent flurries, with a light dusting expected throughout the day, according to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Temperatures will remain chilly today, falling to around 17 degrees by 5 p.m. Windchill values could dip to as low as 7 degrees. The chance of snow continues tonight, mainly before 8 p.m., with overnight lows around 6 degrees and windchills as low as minus 2.

Tuesday will bring a gradual clearing of the skies and slight warmup with a high near 21. However, windchill values will remain low.

A welcome respite from the cold arrives Wednesday, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 35 degrees. This warmup is thanks to a shortwave ridge pushing through the area.

However, the warmer weather will be short-lived. A cold front moving through late Wednesday will bring a period of light snow and gusty winds. While significant snowfall is not expected, blowing snow could be an issue on the plains due to the existing light and fluffy snow cover.

The end of the week will see fluctuating temperatures and continued chances of snow. Friday will be the warmest day, with a high near 36, but snow is likely to return Friday night and linger into the weekend.
