Patrick B. Greenough: 1940 – 2024
Oh, the last goodbye’s the hardest one to say, and this is where the cowboy rides away. ~ George Strait
Patrick B Greenough, 84, of Sheridan, Wyoming, passed away at his home on December 4, 2024.
Son of Frank and Doris Greenough, he was born April 21, 1940 in Billings, Montana. He was raised on the Greenough Ranch north of Recluse, Wyoming. Pat attended grade school in Recluse and graduated from Gillette High School. He attended Casper College and was a member of the Rodeo team. Pat married Peggy Mankin on April 20, 1961 and the couple returned to college, later moving to the Greenough family’s hundred-square-mile ranch. Greg was born in October 1961, daughter Glo in March 1963, Kelly in March 1966 and Vince in June 1969.
Glo became ill and spent many months in Denver’s Children’s Hospital. After Glo’s final surgery, the Greenough family traveled for nearly two months around the country visiting national parks and Disneyland. Glo passed away the summer of 1967, at the age of 4.
The family remained on the Powder River until 1974 when the Greenough ranch was sold. At which point, they moved around northeast Wyoming as Pat worked on the historic T7 and 28 ranch, plus they lived for a time at the mouth of Tongue River Canyon, finally moving near Prairie Dog Creek.
After his 25-year marriage ended in 1986, Pat married Sandi (Beard) Greenough in November 1987, and they continued ranching on Prairie Dog Creek. They became founding members of the Wyoming Stock Dog Association (WSDA). Pat and Sandi were instrumental in introducing ranchers to the importance of trained working stock dogs in ranching operations. They coordinated and hosted two United States Border Collie Handlers Association (USBCHA) and National Sheepdog Trials at the Equestrian Center in Big Horn, which brought handlers and dogs from all over the United States and the world. In 2017, Pat and Sandi were honored as WSDA Legends for their promotion and contribution to the working stock dog in Wyoming. The Greenough’s later sold the ranch on Prairie Dog and opened the Country Pet Inn Boarding facility on Beaver Creek Road.
Pat loved everything about Wyoming: farming, hunting, ranching, family, and rodeo. But above all, he loved his family and friends. Pat had an innate ability to bring people together. Pat’s family was the heart to his soul. He was always involved and supportive of his children’s and especially his grandson Dylan’s activities which included many sporting events. Pat was the Queen of Recluse’s Fourth of July Rodeo! He was larger than life. He loved BIG! Pat left an impression as big as he was on everyone around him.
Pat was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Doris Greenough; his daughter, Glo Greenough; his sister, Mrytle Wallis; and his wife, Sandra Greenough.
He is survived by his children: Greg of Gillette; Kelly (Marvin) of Sheridan; and Vince of Sheridan; along with his grandson, Dylan of Sheridan.
A public viewing will take place at Kane Funeral Home December 20 at 10 a.m, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Graveside service to follow at Elks section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. The family is asking everyone to wear pink in honor of Pat, because he was tough enough to wear pink.
A celebration of Pat’s life will take place afterward, at the Sheridan Elks Lodge 520.
Memorial contributions in Pat’s name may be made to: Elks Lodge, 45 W. Brundage St., Sheridan, WY 82801.
