GILLETTE, Wyo. — Although Rozet Elementary is meeting expectations in growth and equity, there is a need for improvement in some achievement scores.

Principal Travis Heitmann presented that information Tuesday to the Campbell County School District 1 Board of Trustees as part of the school’s annual report.

The report also showed a slight decrease in student enrollment, with the school moving from three sections to two due to a “bubble” of students moving out of the district. Staffing levels remained relatively consistent, with a slight decrease in certified staff and a minor increase in ESP staff.

Rozet Elementary met state standards for growth and equity, although achievement scores were slightly below expectations. Heitmann expressed confidence in the school’s ability to improve achievement scores through high-quality instructional practices and a focus on Tier 1 instruction.

The school has been actively involved in various extracurricular activities and programs. It participated in the Science Olympiad with 70 students and the Young Authors writing competition, with multiple students winning at the district level and at least one placing first in poetry at the state level, Heitmann said.

There’s also a “Rozet Morning News” program produced by students and integrating the Character Strong social-emotional learning program into its curriculum.

Improvement Goals

The school’s improvement goals include:

  • Improving achievement scores in ELA and math
  • Continuing to meet or exceed targets for growth and equity
  • Enhancing science proficiency in grades K–6
  • Developing a comprehensive Behavioral Intervention Program

Board members raised questions about the significant increase in fifth-grade math scores and the school’s preparedness to handle behavioral issues, particularly with the potential influx of students from other schools. Heitmann attributed the math score increase to effective collaboration, teacher support and engaging, hands-on learning experiences. He also expressed confidence in the school’s ability to manage behavioral issues, citing the Character Strong program, a tiered intervention system and strong community support.
