GILLETTE, Wyo. — A new policy enacted by the Gillette City Council on Nov. 19 will allow utility customers to seek reimbursements for overcharges, though it will also allow the city to do the same in underbilled situations.

According to the city, the new policy addresses the collection and reimbursement of revenue received from inaccurate metered consumption for water, sewer and electrical services that sometimes happen due to meter installation and calibration errors at no fault of the customer.

In overcharge situations, customers whose accounts are active and in good standing, who have been charged despite deactivating their accounts or whose accounts have changed ownership may receive reimbursements from the city administrator upon discovery, per the resolution.

In underbilled situations, the new resolution authorizes the city to seek reimbursement from customers for the underbilled amount recorded before discovery, at the discretion of the city administrator, according to the resolution.

The effective date of the resolution is July 1, 2024, the resolution states.
