GILLETTE, Wyo. — On Tuesday, the Gillette City Council publicly accepted completed work relating to a $476,607 sewer replacement project near Twin Spruce Junior High School.

According to the city, the project sought to replace an existing vitrified clay sanitary sewer main located in the alley right of way beside Twin Spruce, which was identified as needing rehabilitation due to its age and poor condition.

The original main was installed in the 1970s. It has since begun to sag and crack due to tree root penetration, the city says.

Per the city, the project replaced the vitrified clay pipe with a new high-density polyethylene pipe and included the installation of two new manholes. Crews utilized a pipe-burst method to reduce surface disturbance in the alleyway. The method involved breaking the old pipe and pulling the new pipe into the same location.

According to the city, the project was scheduled for completion during the summer or early fall months but took longer than expected due to a large amount of unanticipated sandstone that was hit while boring the original pipe.

The original project was approved at $457,328; however, due to the project running longer than expected with additional damages, the final award was $476,607, a nearly $20,000 increase, per the city.
