GILLETTE, Wyo. — On Tuesday, Campbell County commissioners approved a grant of $58,333 for the purchase of new body armor and ballistic protection equipment. The grant, awarded by the Wyoming Department of Homeland Security, will be used to replace outdated equipment and outfit new members of the county’s Special Response Unit.

The grant aims to help Campbell County address emerging threats, prevent acts of terrorism and protect citizens and assets, county documents state.

Lt. Dan Maul presented the grant request to the commission, highlighting the need for updated equipment due to outdated existing armor and an increase in personnel. The new equipment will include heavier armor and handheld ballistic shields.

Commissioner questions addressed the disposal of old equipment, with Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds explaining that it is retained by the department due to liability concerns. While outdated, some older equipment may still be used in certain situations where no other ballistic protection is available.

The commission expressed appreciation for the department’s proactive approach to securing funding and partnerships. The grant was unanimously approved.

The grant is part of the State Homeland Security Program, which provides funding to state and local governments to improve their ability to prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to and recover from terrorist attacks and other catastrophic events.

The grant is effective from Sept. 1, 2024, through Aug. 31, 2026. The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office is required to comply with all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations in the performance of this grant.
