C17 Crime Clips for Friday, Nov. 15

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Here is a summary of notable crimes in and around Gillette yesterday, Nov. 14, obtained through law enforcement reports compiled by the Gillette Police Department and the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.  

Vehicle fire, Nov. 14, Hannum Road, CCSO

A garbage truck reportedly caught fire on Hannum Road, prompting an emergency response around 8:45 a.m., Sheriff Scott Matheny said. Fire personnel managed to contain the fire to the compactor area and extinguished it before the vehicle was taken to the landfill to be unloaded. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Fraud, Nov. 14, Cheryl Avenue, GPD

Officers responded to Cheryl Avenue to investigate potential fraud reported by a 47-year-old woman around 12:26 p.m., Gillette Police Capt. Kelly Alger said. The woman said she paid hundreds of dollars to an individual advertising available space at the Nick of Time Tradeshow. CAM-PLEX staff had no record of her payment when she showed up and said they stopped accepting payment for space months ago. The 47-year-old has since disputed the charge with her financial institution, and the investigation is ongoing.

Animal cruelty, Nov. 14, American Lane, GPD

City animal control officers responded to American Lane at the request of the sheriff’s office after deputies discovered animal remains and inhumane living conditions around 12:52 p.m., Alger said. Nine cats lived in the residence, seven of which were taken to the animal shelter while the remaining two couldn’t be captured. A 45-year-old man was cited with two counts of animal cruelty. The investigation is ongoing.

Harassment, Nov. 14, West Boxelder Road, CCSO

A 41-year-old woman went to the sheriff’s office at 3:05 p.m. to report her 47-year-old ex-husband was texting her 16-year-old son and that she wanted him to stop, Sheriff Scott Matheny said. There were no protection or contact orders in place, but the woman wanted it to stop due to criminal allegations against the 47-year-old. Deputies showed her how to block a phone number, and the information was forwarded to Nevada, where local authorities will contact the man.

Theft, Nov. 14, Overdale Drive, GPD

A 66-year-old man called the police at 3:17 p.m. to report a stolen UPS package on Overdale Drive, Alger said. The man reported seeing UPS deliver the package — containing a $25 sleeping bag liner — to his home. When he went to retrieve it 45 minutes later, the package was gone. The investigation is ongoing.

Bar fight, Nov. 15, Highway 14-16, GPD

Officers responded to a bar on Highway 14-16 around 12:43 a.m. for a report of a bar fight between a 29-year-old man and a 26-year-old man, Alger said. According to the report, the 29-year-old punched the 26-year-old in the face, saying he did so because the 26-year-old charged him. The 26-year-old admitted to attacking the older man and said he was upset over seeing the 29-year-old push a 30-year-old woman to the ground. There were no injuries on the woman, and the 29-year-old denied the pushing allegation. The 26-year-old was transported to the hospital for treatment, and criminal charges are pending.
