There’s a phrase that has existed in the collective vernacular for quite some time. It’s been oft-repeated and printed on all sorts of picture frames, wall-hangers and any other Hobby Lobby house décor.
“Home is where the heart is.”
While there’s no clear origin for the phrase, most agree that it originated with one of Rome’s most notable scholars, a man named Pliny the Elder. Born in 23 A.D., Pliny wrote several books and was a renowned scholar. In America, it appears that the utterance made its debut in a play called “Davey Crockett and Other Plays,” written by J.J. McCloskey. In the play, McCloskey wrote, “Well, home, they say, is where the heart is.”
And ever since those days, days long gone by, the phrase has become one of the most repeated and well-loved sayings in the history of English verbiage. There’s a good reason for that.
It’s true.
Home is a safe place. Home is a sanctuary. It’s a warm blanket on a cold night. It’s a place to live, to laugh, to love (speaking of Hobby Lobby phrases). It’s a place where you can be yourself — by yourself or with those you love. Home, for all of us, is the most important place on earth.
Lacy Davis knows this, which is why she started Healing Hearts Home Health. Davis, the CEO and RN Administrator for Healing Hearts, knows that home is where the heart is and she wants to help people stay there for as long as they can.
Davis started Healing Hearts Home Health in March 2018 but, even before that, she spent the majority of her life providing home healthcare services to those who needed it.
“I started doing home health when I was 15 years old,” Davis said with a smile, no doubt remembering her early days in the healthcare realm. “I worked my way up the ladder and, in 2018, we started Healing Hearts and it’s really just grown from there. We are one of two Medicare-certified home health agencies in Gillette.”
Being Medicare-certified is an important distinction, as many of the people who need home healthcare have Medicare as their primary or secondary insurance, and it’s what allows them to utilize the services that Healing Hearts offers, because Medicare pays 100% for home healthcare.
And those services are vast and varied.
The staff at Healing Hearts provide a number of different services, including skilled nursing, home health aide, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and more. They also offer more practical, non-medical services like light housekeeping, laundry assistance, shopping and assistance with everyday errands and more. Each of these services is designed to ensure a happy, healthy, and safe recovery process from the comfort of one’s home.
“I truly believe that home is where you heal the best, and it’s where you thrive the most,” Davis shared. “When you take care of people in their home, you see a different version of them. You see the good, the bad and the ugly. And you can better help them to live successfully in the environment that they’re going to be in, on a daily basis.”
Davis has spent the majority of her life working in this type of environment. She knows how important it is that clients feel safe and comfortable, and she knows that safe healing and comfort are best achieved in one’s own home.
So, in addition to being one of two Medicare-certified home health agencies in Gillette, Healing Hearts also offers outpatient physical therapy in the home. This is something that no other agency offers, and it even allows patients to continue to work with their same therapists after an acute illness, when they’re no longer homebound.
“Healing Hearts Home Health is owned and operated by medical professionals with years of experience and who understand the value of healing in the comfort of your own home,” the company’s website states. “We know the complexities of illnesses and are committed to assisting you and your family at home. A registered nurse will work with you, your doctor, and your family to design a comprehensive home health plan to meet your needs. We get satisfaction from nurturing our patients and giving our hands and hearts to those in need of home health services. Seeing that you are happy makes us happy, and we would love the opportunity to provide the assistance you need.”
Healing Hearts, for the past six years, has been providing that assistance throughout Gillette and the rest of Campbell County.
“We serve Crook and Campbell County with our Outpatient PT program, and we serve Campbell County for home health services.”
Additionally, Davis emphasized, Healing Hearts does not want to compete with hospitals, or providers, or senior centers. They want to work alongside those agencies in order to provide the best possible care to all patients.
They have worked hard and have built great relationships with other healthcare entities in Campbell County, which serves as an amazing resource for their patients.
“Relationship” is an important word here; a key component. Healing Hearts believes in the power of relationships — with their healthcare partners, with their clients and with their employees. Especially with their employees.
“In this business,” Davis said, “your employees are the heart of your company. And I’m extremely blessed to have such an awesome staff; people who go above and beyond in their caring ways and who really treat our clients like they’re family.”
It’s that family-like tie that binds the staff of Healing Hearts with their clients on a daily basis.
“One of the reasons that I wanted to start my own company was because I didn’t like how a lot of other companies were running their home health,” Davis stated. “I wanted to do something a little bit different. I wanted people to feel like we were coming in to be more of an extension of their family. That’s where our tagline — ‘Where your family’s our family’ — came from. I want our clients to know, and feel, that there’s always going to be the good, the bad and the ugly. But the bad and the ugly can be overcome. And the good is what remains.”
The exceptionally good part of Healing Hearts Home Health — maybe even the best part of the agency — is its employees.
At any given point, Healing Hearts might have around 40 different employees, with core members of the team being a nurse, a therapist and a CNA. Healing Hearts has physical therapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists and more. A home healthcare service has to have those highly-qualified, certified staff members, and Healing Hearts has the best in the business.
Each of these employees performs a vital service, and each of them does everything they can to make sure a client is living safely, happily, healthily and, maybe most importantly, with a sense of dignity.
Dignity is another important word when it comes to this line of work. The staff at Healing Hearts know this, which is why they are dedicated to maintaining that sense of dignity for clients, in any aspect of their home health services.
The goal of most home healthcare services is to keep clients in their homes for as long as possible. The idea of home healthcare was founded on the belief that people feel better, think better, are better, when they’re at home. It’s where they’re most comfortable. It’s where they feel safe. It’s where they can allow themselves to be just a little bit vulnerable.
“We want all patients to feel like they are being cared for, ‘like family,’ and know they can heal and remain in their home with the support of our home health clinical team,” Davis said. “People thrive best in their own environments. We also work closely with physicians, practitioners and other healthcare entities on behalf of the patient to ensure they have all the resources to succeed and stay in the comfort of their homes. We want to be known for the kind of care we offer and make sure patients know they are the center and heart of our business.”
Home is a special place. It’s where memories are created and dreams are made. It’s where dinners are cooked and games are played. It is warmth and it is joy and it is everything that’s good, everything that is special, everything that is beautiful about this so-called life. Home is where families are built and where love is shared. Home is the most important place in the world. Because home, as they say, is where the heart is. And it’s where Healing Hearts Home Health will meet you; no matter where you’re at.
