Coach Sawvel: ‘Kaden Anderson to start against New Mexico’

LARAMIE, Wyo. — Wyoming Football Head Coach Jay Sawvel announced today that redshirt freshman Kaden Anderson will start in Saturday’s game against New Mexico.

Currently, Wyoming has started Evan Svoboda at the quarterback position for the last eight games without much success; Wyoming is 1–7. Meanwhile, Anderson was limited to a few short appearances closer to the end of games, usually when Wyoming’s fate was already decided.

In Wyoming’s season opener, Anderson was responsible for the passing touchdown that made up the only points Wyoming got that evening.

In UW’s most recent match against Utah State, Sawvel implemented a two-quarterback system in which Anderson and Svoboda would switch off on the field every few minutes. In that game, Svoboda still started, but Anderson saw a lot more success than his contemporary.

In total, Anderson rushed for a gain of 33 yards. He passed for 182 yards and was 15–24 on attempts. Svoboda, meanwhile, passed for 12 yards and had an interception.

Sawvel cited poor offense and Anderson’s improvement as the factors in his decision.

“Kaden Anderson’s gonna start this week. I spoke with both of them today and Kaden will be the starter this week. I thought he performed pretty well the other night,” Sawvel said. “He had probably two plays that you gotta look at and go, ‘Hey, you gotta be careful with this,’ but I thought overall he did a very good job of keeping us in a rhythm and in a flow.”

Wyoming plays New Mexico this Saturday at 2 p.m. in Albuquerque. For more information on this game, including how to view from afar, see the UW Athletics website or the Mountain West Conference website.
