Snow showers, gusty winds in Gillette; warmer weekend ahead

GILLETTE, Wyo. — A cool, breezy and snowy morning is in store for Gillette as an upper-level front moves across the region.

Gillette awoke to find snow flurries in the air and patches of slush on area roads and Interstate 90. The National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota, is expecting to see accumulations of less than a half-inch; however, localized heavier bands of precipitation may lead to slightly higher amounts in some spots of northeast Wyoming.

Breezy conditions are expected, with gusts of up to 25 mph accompanied by sustained speeds of 10–15 mph. Winds will gradually decrease throughout the evening as the weather system moves out and high pressure settles in.

Gillette woke up to slushy roads as snow fell overnight during the early morning hours of Oct. 18, 2024. Interstate 90 is seen here, slick with snow and slush. (Wyoming Department of Transportation)

A warming trend is anticipated by the weekend, with temperatures climbing back into the mid- to upper 70s, especially in western and central South Dakota. However, a disturbance early next week could bring another round of cooler temperatures and a slight chance of precipitation.
