GILLETTE, Wyo. — A citywide chip seal project aimed at preserving and extending the life of Gillette’s roads has been successfully completed. The project, which wrapped up in August, focused on preventative maintenance to enhance and protect road surfaces.

On Tuesday, the Gillette City Council was told that the city’s PAVER software program helped identify areas in need of attention. Crews then applied chip seal in a process that involved cleaning the existing road surface, applying a mixture of asphalt and water and then embedding a layer of crushed gravel into the asphalt. A fog seal was applied for added protection and to secure the gravel.

City documents state chip sealing has many benefits, including preventing water damage, filling cracks, improving skid resistance and enhancing visibility for drivers, especially during wet weather and at night. Chip sealing also costs 15% to 20% of pavement overlays.

The method extends the lifespan of road surfaces by an estimated five to seven years. The project was completed within the scheduled time frame and under budget.

Initially awarded to Simon Contractors for $471,913, the final project cost came in at $457,751. The project was fully funded by the Optional 1% Sales Tax Fund, which had allocated $522,316 for fiscal year 2024.
