Council: $125K road repair project wraps up on time

Ross Ave between 2nd & 3rd Streets in downtown Gillette

GILLETTE, Wyo. — A major road maintenance project aimed at extending the lifespan of Gillette’s streets has been completed on schedule.

On Tuesday, the Gillette City Council was told the project, which focused on preventative measures like crack sealing and mastic repair, targeted areas identified as needing attention by the city’s PAVER software program.

About 35,864 linear feet of cracks were sealed and 8,125 square feet of mastic repair to the road surface was done. Crack sealing involves grinding out cracks, cleaning them and filling them with a sealant to prevent water damage. Mastic repair is used for larger cracks and alligatoring, in which a hot-poured liquid asphalt is used to fill gaps and low spots.

“By performing crack sealing and mastic repair maintenance, we can extend pavement life by preventing the infiltration of water, which freezes during the winter months, causing damage by expanding the existing crack in the pavement which eventually becomes a pothole,” city documents state.

The project was awarded to Z & Z Sealing and Coating for an initial amount of $94,308.99. However, three change orders were necessary to address additional repairs, bringing the final cost to $124,987.22. The changes included:

  • Change Order #1: An increase of $20,603.50 for additional mastic sealing in areas where larger cracks were discovered.
  • Change Order #2: An increase of $10,074.73 for crack sealing along Overland Trail.
  • Change Order #3: A reduction of $579.67 to reconcile final quantities.

Funding for the project came from the Optional 1% Sales Tax Fund, which had an allocation of $172,020 for the 2024 fiscal year.
