GILLETTE, Wyo. — Sections of highways in northeast Wyoming that had previously been closed due to activity from the Elk Fire have now been reopened, WYDOT announced in a post to Facebook on Monday.
US 14 has been reopened between Greybull and Burgess Junction, with US 14A reopening from Burgess Junction to Lovell. WYDOT said that US 14 east will remained closed from Burgess Junction to Dayton.
Heavy firefighting and movement of fire crews remain active in the area despite the reopening, and WYDOT reminded drivers to remain vigilant while driving in the area. Wyoming Highway Patrol officers will also be monitoring the closure gates at Dayton and Burgess Junction, WYDOT said.
The Elk Fire has also caused the Bighorn National Forest Service to close several forest service roads in the area since they are within the fire boundary. The roads are not accessible to drivers at this time.
Forest service roads that will be closed include:
- Forest Service Road 26/Dead Swede to Red Grade on US 14
- Forest Service Roads 14
- Forest Service Road 15
- Forest Service Road 178
