LARAMIE, Wyo. — Another Saturday in Laramie means another day of Wyoming football. On this unseasonably warm October Saturday, however, the Cowboys could not overcome the San Diego State Aztecs and lost 27–24.

A lot of the energy that showed itself two Saturdays ago when the Cowboys won against the Air Force Falcons seems to have dissipated, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Star quarterback Evan Svoboda, who had a breakout game against the Falcons, was 12 of 31 passing and passed for only 181 yards. Meanwhile, his San Diego State counterpart, Danny O’Neil, passed 16 of 27 for a total of 254 yards.

One of those throws for Svoboda resulted in a big 70-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Jaylen Sargent. Svoboda ran for a touchdown of his own across 51 yards. The other Wyoming touchdown was the result of a rush from running back Sam Scott.

Svoboda was also intercepted twice, while O’Neil was intercepted just once. Wyoming’s QB was at the receiving end of a sack six times this afternoon; San Diego was the recipient of only one.

In total, Wyoming actually got the ball across more yards than San Diego State. In fact, the 371 yards Wyoming had tonight is the team’s best performance of the season.

Foul trouble and offensive inefficiency were really what did the Cowboys in. Wyoming’s head coach said in a post-game conference that the winner will be the team that makes the least mistakes, according to the University of Wyoming’s Athletics Department.

“We made critical mistakes too often in all phases of the game,” Sawvel said. “You could go on and on and there’s just times that we just didn’t finish the play off like we needed to. We made mistakes you can’t make to win a game like that.”

Before the two teams’ meeting today, Wyoming and San Diego State were tied all-time 19–19. The Aztecs today have the upper hand until their next encounter.
