LARAMIE, Wyo. — With many of the University of Wyoming’s fall sports in full swing, now is the perfect opportunity to mark the calendars for every time the Cowboys take on the Colorado State University Rams. The Border War is a war of many fronts, and Wyoming has over a dozen sanctioned sports that will take on the Rams this academic year.
Below is a month-by-month schedule of every time the Cowboys compete against the Rams in either Laramie or Fort Collins through the rest of the academic year as of Oct. 7, 2024. Not included are invites where both teams may be competing in addition to other schools outside of either Wyoming or Colorado. Also not included are conference championship meets.
Wyoming vs. CSU games in October
Volleyball
The Cowgirls volleyball team, currently 9–5 in the season, will take on the CSU rams twice this season. The first of the two meetings will take place tomorrow, Oct. 8, at 6 p.m. in Fort Collins. This game will be available to watch through the Mountain West Network. Currently, the Rams are 8–6 for the season but are just coming off a 3–0 victory over fellow conference opponent Fresno State.
The Cowgirls are historically the losers when it comes to playing the Rams. Between 2013 and 2023, Wyoming is 5–17 against Colorado State. The two teams’ most recent matchup, which took place Oct. 31 last year, saw a 3–1 loss for Wyoming. This year, however, the Cowgirls have the better record and may have been even further ahead of the Rams had they not forfeited a game against San Jose State just last weekend.
Soccer
Again in Fort Collins, the Cowgirls will travel to the Rams for a special Halloween soccer game Oct. 31 at 4 p.m. This is the only time currently scheduled that the two schools will meet in this sport, so Wyoming will have only one chance to prove that a better record doesn’t mean anything.
As of Oct. 7, the Cowgirls are 3–4–5, and just added their fifth tie of the season yesterday against San Jose State. The Rams, on the other hand, just won against Fresno State 3–2. They are 8–3–1 for the season and have a perfect 4–0 record in conference play.
November
Volleyball
The University of Wyoming’s volleyball team will have another chance at the CSU Rams Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m., but with a home-court advantage this time. Conference play will be fully in effect at this point, so these will be two very seasoned teams facing off against one another come November.
Tickets for this game are currently available for purchase and can be purchased here. Like all UW volleyball games, this match can be seen at the UniWyo Sports Complex in the heart of UW’s Laramie campus.
Swimming and Diving
Wyoming’s swimming and diving team will bus down south to Fort Collins Nov. 8 for a 4 p.m. meet against Colorado State. Between 2015 and 2020, the time period provided by UW Athletics, the Cowboys and Cowgirls have come out on top all five times against the Rams. In the final meet of 2020, the Pokes outclassed the Rams 184–116. Nov. 8 will reveal if the Pokes have still got it.
Football
What is considered the game of the year by many Wyoming Cowboys fans and what is the namesake of the entire rivalry between the two schools will take place in Fort Collins, Colorado, on Nov. 15 at 6 p.m.
The Border War is one of the oldest and most-played rivalry games in the history of college football, dating all the way back to 1899. Since its inception, Colorado State leads 59–51. However, Wyoming has been the clearly dominant team since the conclusion of World War II and is 12–7 since 2005.
Currently, however, the Cowboys are having an off-season and are holding a 1–4 record. The Rams aren’t doing much better, though, brandishing a 2–3 record for the season. This game will primarily be available through the CBS Sports Network.
January
Men’s Basketball
Neither men’s nor women’s basketball has started yet in the NCAA, but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to look forward to the storied meeting between rival schools Wyoming and Colorado State. Men’s basketball will be the first to take on the Rams with a Jan. 18 game in Laramie. The time of said game is to be announced as of Oct. 7, but it will become available to view on the UW Athletics web page.
Historically, the Cowboys have stayed toe-to-toe with one of the better teams in the Group of Five conferences, as the team is 11–12 against the Rams since 2014. The last meeting between the schools, however, saw a 70–62 victory for Colorado State.
Women’s Basketball
Just a week after the Cowboys face CSU for the first time in the upcoming season, the Cowgirls will do the same. The game, slated to also take place in Laramie’s Arena Auditorium at a yet-to-be-determined time, is set for Jan. 25.
The Cowgirls haven’t had the same luck as the Cowboys against the Rams in the game of basketball. Since 2014, Wyoming is 10–15 against CSU and the last matchup between the schools was a 75–70 win for Colorado State. Just like the men’s basketball game, the time for this game will be announced in the coming months on the UW Athletics web page.
February
Men’s Basketball
Rematch time for the Cowboys basketball team comes in February as the basketball season starts to wind down. The Cowboys will travel to Fort Collins this time on Feb. 15 at a time also to be announced.
As could be expected, the Cowboys do worse on the road against the Rams. In away games at CSU, the Cowboys are 3–7 compared to a home record of 7–5 against the rival school.
March
Women’s Basketball
Unlike the men’s basketball team, the University of Wyoming’s women’s basketball team won’t get a second chance to face off against the Rams until March. This time in Fort Collins, tipoff will start at a time yet announced on March 1, 2025.
Similar to the Cowboys, the Cowgirls having a losing record in away games against CSU, having won only three of the last nine matches. The cowgirls are 6–4 against the Rams at home, however.
Outdoor Track and Field
As the weather starts to improve and the University of Wyoming’s school year begins drawing to a close, the school’s men and women’s outdoor track and field team will take on the Rams at the Jack Christiansen Invite March 29–30 in Fort Collins, Colorado.
April
Outdoor Track and Field
It also won’t be long until the outdoor track and field team returns to Fort Collins on April 28 for the Doug Max Invite. This will be Wyoming’s final meet before Mountain West and subsequent NCAA championships begin.
