Cold front knocks temps today into mid-50s; warmer days ahead this week

GILLETTE, Wyo. — A strong cold front is sweeping through the region this morning, bringing much cooler temperatures and gusty northwest winds to Gillette.

Wind advisories are in effect for areas east of Campbell County as some locations can expect gusts over 60 mph. However, Campbell County remains under a red flag warning through 8 p.m. while strong winds gradually diminish throughout the afternoon.

Despite cooler temperatures to start the week, above-normal temps are expected to return Tuesday. Another cool front might knock temperatures Thursday, but a high of 80 is possible on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota.

As dry conditions and low moisture levels persist, meteorologists remain concerned about elevated fire weather conditions well into the weekend.

For today, the high should be around 56 degrees under sunny skies. Winds will come from the north at 16–24 mph with gusts of 38 mph possible. Tonight, areas of frost are possible after 5 a.m. The night should be mostly clear with a low near 31. North winds will fall from 9–14 mph to a light breeze.

Warmer air returns on a breezy Tuesday to bump the high to 75. South winds will initially blow at 16–21 mph but fall to 8–13 mph in the afternoon, according to the forecast. Tuesday night’s low will be 43 under mostly clear skies.
