Above-normal temps, critical fire weather conditions today prompt red flag warning

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Northeast Wyoming can expect a continuation of dry weather and unusually warm temperatures through the weekend. The combination of dry air, sunshine and breezes will create fire weather concerns, prompting the National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota, to issue a red flag warning for today.

Breezy southerly winds gusting at up to 35 mph will combine with humidities in the lower teens, priming conditions for any fires that may spark, meteorologists said. The warning is in effect for Campbell County from noon to 8 p.m. today.

Today will be sunny with a high of 91, marking the warmest day of the week. Winds from the south should reach 11–20 mph and pick up tonight to 14–17 mph. Tonight’s skies will remain mostly clear as the low falls only to 61 degrees.

Ahead of an expected cool front, Thursday will be equally warm with a high of 90 under sunny skies. Winds will come from the southwest at 10–17 mph, then turn to come from the north as the cold front approaches. Gusts could reach 26 mph. Thursday night will be mostly clear as the temperature falls to 49. Winds at 13–18 mph will come from the north and calm after midnight to 6–11 mph, according to the forecast.

While the cooler air will help bring overnight lows closer to normal, daytime temperatures the rest of the week will remain well above normal, flirting again with 90 degrees over the weekend. Early next week, the weather pattern is expected to become more unsettled with a series of upper lows and a rebounding upper high.

A stronger cold front may cross the region early next week, but chances for significant precipitation are low, meteorologists said in the forecast discussion. Any cool spell early next week is likely to be short-lived as the high is expected to rebuild, bringing warmer temperatures back to the area.
