GILLETTE, Wyo. — A red flag warning has been issued for Wednesday afternoon as unseasonably hot temperatures make a comeback in northeast Wyoming.
After a week of seasonable fall weather, things in Campbell County will be heating up Wednesday, with temperatures jumping nearly 20 degrees into the low 90s.
The high temperatures combined with wind gusts of up to 35 mph and low humidity will create “critical fire weather conditions,” the National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota, said in a post to social media Tuesday afternoon.
The warning will be in effect from noon until 8 p.m. The Campbell County Fire Department said on Facebook Monday that in critical fire conditions it is important for residents to avoid outdoor burning, using open flames and driving vehicles or equipment that can throw sparks.
Temperatures in Gillette will remain high for several days into this week, with a high of 93 Wednesday and high lingering in the mid- to high 80 until Sunday. This pattern will break Monday, with a more seasonally appropriate 63 degrees expected.
