C17 Crime Clips for Tuesday, Sept. 24

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Here is a summary of notable crimes in and around Gillette yesterday, Sept. 23, obtained through law enforcement reports compiled by the Gillette Police Department and the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.  

Fraud, Sept. 23, Nathan Hale Road, CCSO

A 66-year-old woman is reportedly out $3,300 that she paid in “taxes” through a Publisher’s Clearing House scam around 10:39 a.m., Sheriff’s Office Lt. Dan Maul said. The woman believed she was paying taxes to claim $8.5 million in winnings and was contacted by “Howie Guja.” She reportedly looked the man up on social media and sent the money after seeing his picture. The investigation is ongoing.

Fraud, Sept. 23, Commercial Drive, CCSO

Deputies responded to Commercial Drive in Wright after a wire business employee called to report a stolen $24,550 check around 11:24 a.m., Maul said. The check was mailed to Chicago, where it was reportedly intercepted and cashed. The reporting party was referred to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Shoplifting, Sept. 23, East Lakeway Road, GPD

Officers cited a 19-year-old man and two 18-year-old men with shoplifting after they admitted to stealing wire cutters valued at $26 around 4:07 p.m., Deputy Police Chief Brent Wasson said.

Theft, Sept. 23, Heather Court, GPD

A 25-year-old woman called the police at 7:47 p.m. to report someone stole over $2,000 from her unsecured vehicle on Heather Court, Wasson said. The money was kept in a 2005 Ford and the woman last saw it a week before the report. The investigation is ongoing.

Drugs, Sept. 23, 2nd Street, GPD

Officers arrested a 52-year-old man for two counts of felony drug possession following a traffic stop on 2nd Street near 4-J Road around 9:28 p.m., Wasson said. The man was stopped in a 1996 Dodge for failing to use a turn signal. During the stop, a drug dog indicated positively to the odor of a controlled substance. A subsequent search yielded four-tenths of a gram of liquid meth, half a gram of crystal meth and 4.5 grams of marijuana. The meth possession charges were both third or subsequent, elevating them to the felony level. The man was cited for having marijuana.

Drugs, Sept. 23, Highway 59, CCSO

A 27-year-old man was arrested on a warrant and charged with drug possession as well as taking drugs into jail following a traffic stop on Highway 59 around 9:40 p.m., Maul said. The man was driving a vehicle while two people stood up through the sunroof. A deputy stopped the vehicle at a fueling station near the central exchange. After the man was taken to the Campbell County Detention Center, detention staff located a misdemeanor amount of cocaine on him.
