C17 Crime Clips for Monday, Sept. 23

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Here is a summary of notable crimes in and around Gillette over the weekend, obtained through law enforcement reports compiled by the Gillette Police Department and the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.  

Fraud, Sept. 20, Shober Road, CCSO

A 68-year-old man is out $140,000 after allegedly falling victim to a cryptocurrency scam, Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds said. The man called the sheriff’s office at 9:09 a.m. to report he was contacted by a potential love interest who convinced him to send $135,000 through a cryptocurrency website. He sent an additional $5,000 through another transfer. The investigation is ongoing.

Drugs, Sept. 20, East Lincoln Street, CCSO

Officers responded to an apartment complex on East Lincoln Street around 4:58 p.m. to investigate reports of a marijuana odor, Deputy Police Chief Brent Wasson said. They were able to determine where the marijuana odor was coming from and contacted a 20-year-old man who allegedly admitted to smoking delta-8. He turned over the pipe he used and officers ultimately determined the man had smoked marijuana and not delta-8. The man was cited for using a controlled substance.

Trespassing, Sept. 20, North Highway 14-16, GPD

A 34-year-old man was trespassed from two fueling stations at the request of his manager who told officers he was making employees feel uncomfortable around 8:25 a.m., Wasson said. The 34-year-old man reportedly sent an inappropriate message to a co-worker, a 20-year-old woman, and was trespassed from the North Highway 14-16 store as well as another store location.

Suspicious activity, Sept. 21, Rodgers Drive, GPD

Officers responded to a hotel on Rodgers Drive around 6:29 a.m. after an employee called to report finding the office had been broken into, Wasson said. The door was reportedly broken off its hinges and a filing cabinet was overturned. A 42-year-old employee returned to the business while officers were there and admitted to causing the damage. The employee, a woman, said she broke into the office using a fire extinguisher at the request of a person she believed to be the hotel owner. The “owner” told her to send money so they could pay for a package. The 42-year-old employee was able to access $249 and sent it using Cash App. No charges were filed.

Drugs, Sept. 21, Interstate 90, CCSO

Deputies arrested a 48-year-old man for two counts of drug possession and breach of peace following an Interstate 90 traffic stop around 11:26 a.m., Reynolds said. During the stop, a deputy could see a marijuana roach in plain view and could smell the odor of marijuana. A search yielded 16 grams of plant-form marijuana and 183 grams of THC-infused chocolate. Following his arrest, the 48-year-old man reportedly threatened a ride-along subject.

DWUI, Sept. 21, American Road, CCSO

Two people were transported to the hospital following a single-vehicle rollover on American Road around 5:22 p.m., Reynolds said. A 27-year-old man was reportedly driving a silver 2004 Ford Focus that overturned, resulting in over $1,000 in damage. There was a 15-year-old girl in the vehicle as well and there were multiple open alcohol containers near the crash. According to Reynolds, deputies cited the 27-year-old for DWUI.

DWUI, Sept. 22, Highway 387, CCSO

Deputies arrested a 29-year-old man for impaired driving after he allegedly rolled his 1996 Chevrolet Blazer on Highway 387 around 1:49 a.m., Reynolds said. Deputies were called to the area by two residents reporting a potential drunk driver with whom they nearly collided before the Chevrolet rolled. The 29-year-old man displayed signs of intoxication when deputies arrived and was taken into custody after failing field sobriety tests.
