GILLETTE, Wyo. — A nationwide initiative by the Bissell Pet Foundation this fall will reduce adoption fees in Wyoming shelters, including the City of Gillette Animal Shelter.
Starting Oct. 1, the Bissell Pet Foundation will hold its Fall National Empty the Shelters reduced-fee event, allowing anyone looking to adopt a fixed and vaccinated pet to take one home for $50 or less, per a Sept. 19 release.
In Wyoming, the City of Gillette Animal Shelter, Cheyenne Animal Shelter, Second Chance Sheridan Cat Rescue and St. Francis Animal Shelter are participating in the event, the release states, adding that actual participation dates vary by shelter.
Since its beginning, the Fall Empty the Shelter initiative has helped nearly 283,000 pets find loving homes, making the event the largest funded adoption event in the country. During the event, the Bissell Pet Foundation sponsors reduced adoption fees so shelters can charge $50 or less to take pets from kennels to the couches of loving homes, per the release.
“Right now, our nation’s animal shelters are in crisis with too many pets coming in and not enough adoptions to keep up. Euthanasia rates have hit a 3-year-high, and healthy, adoptable pets are at risk due to space constraints,” Cathay Bissell, foundation founder, said in a statement.
Bissell says the Empty the Shelters event helps save lives through adoption while creating space for shelters to help more pets. Fostering is a viable option as well for those who can’t adopt.
