GILLETTE, Wyo. — A strong, dry cold front is set to move through the region tonight, bringing gusty northwest winds after a day of warm temperatures.
Today’s weather conditions pose a critical fire risk across parts of northeast Wyoming and southwest South Dakota, with elevated fire weather conditions expected elsewhere. The dry and windy conditions will persist through Saturday, increasing the potential for wildfires.
The National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota, has issued a red flag warning that includes southern Campbell County. Critical fire weather conditions are expected as skies remain clear, winds remain gusty and humidity remains low.
Today will see a high of 80 degrees under sunny skies in Gillette. Winds will come from the west at 6–11 mph with gusts reaching 22 mph. Gusts will increase to 26 mph tonight after winds shift to come from the north at 10–16 mph. The low tonight will be 41 under mostly clear skies.
A sunny, but cooler weekend is forecast with highs in the 60s. Saturday will be the cooler day of the weekend in the wake of the latest cold front. Temperatures will begin to rise again Sunday, remaining in the high 60s for the early part of next week before climbing back into the 80s by midweek.
