CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Casper man Frank Ray Berris, 53, was sentenced to 90 months in prison for being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition following an armed standoff that lasted roughly three hours in February. Berris was convicted in June, and the sentence was imposed Friday.
According to evidence presented during the trial, Berris had been stopped by a Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper in February. At the time, Berris was driving with false license plates. He was also unable to present the trooper with a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance or registration for the vehicle.
During the traffic stop, the trooper also noticed a pistol and holster between Berris and his car’s console, as well as a rifle between the console and passenger seat. From there, the situation escalated into an armed standoff that lasted roughly three hours and closed a portion of Highway 20/26.
During the standoff, Berris allegedly told officers that they would have to kill him to get him out of the vehicle, though he eventually surrendered.
After the standoff ended, law enforcement executed a search warrant on Berris’s vehicle and found a semiautomatic rifle, two semiautomatic pistols and ammunition of various calibers. As a felon, Berris was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.
