C17 Crime Clips for Thursday, Sept. 19

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Here is a summary of notable crimes in and around Gillette yesterday, Sept. 18, obtained through law enforcement reports compiled by the Gillette Police Department and the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.  

Fraud, Sept. 18, Longhorn Avenue, GPD

A 59-year-old woman called the police from Longhorn Avenue around 10:16 a.m. to report losing over $2,500 after falling victim to an identity protection scam, Gillette Deputy Police Chief Brent Wasson said. The woman said someone claiming to represent her credit union called her and convinced her to provide her social security number, debit card number and credit card numbers. Soon after, the woman noticed $2,500 in fraudulent charges and contacted her financial institution to report the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

Drugs, Sept. 18, Highway 14-16, GPD

Officers responded to a campground on Highway 14-16 after a 58-year-old man called to report someone was circling his camper and was trying to get in through a window around 10:38 a.m., Wasson said. When they arrived, officers could see the man showing signs of recent drug use. He was arrested for drug use after admitting to injecting and smoking methamphetamine. No controlled substances were located.

Property destruction, Sept. 18, Echeta Road, CCSO

Someone reportedly shot three transformers on Echeta Road recently, resulting in around $50,000 in damage, Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds said Thursday. Deputies were called to the area around 4 p.m. on Sept. 17 after an energy company employee discovered the damage. A K-9 was deployed for an article search and deputies recovered multiple .357 magnum cartridge casings. The damage is believed to have happened a day or two before the report, and the investigation is ongoing.

Theft, Sept. 18, South Douglas Highway, GPD

A 61-year-old woman called the police to report unauthorized charges on her credit card around 5:02 p.m., Wasson said. The woman reportedly left her black, fuzzy wallet in a shopping cart at a department store on South Douglas Highway four days before the report. The wallet contained her social security card, credit card and ID. She noticed a charge on her credit card for $22 at a local fueling station and called the police.

Counterfeiting, Sept. 18, Highway 59, GPD

Officers responded to a fueling station on Highway 59 after staff called to report finding a counterfeit $100 bill around 7:29 p.m., Wasson said. The bill was found while an employee was making change for another employee. The bill was logged into evidence.
