Storm chances rise before dry, cool spell for rest of the week

GILLETTE, Wyo. — An upper low passing through northeast Wyoming may bring the chance for a severe thunderstorm this afternoon.

The National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota, is calling for a high of 82 under mostly sunny skies for most of the day. Clouds will increase this afternoon as the chance for a thunderstorm rises to 60%. Thunderstorms are most likely between 5 and 11 p.m. Windy conditions are expected with a south wind at 11–16 mph picking up to 18–23 mph this afternoon. Gusts could reach 34 mph.

Gillette is in a Level 1 of 5 risk zone for severe thunderstorms today. For Campbell County, the main threats will be damaging winds and some hail, meteorologists said. Storm chances increase to 80% this evening before tapering off as the low moves east. Skies will become mostly clear as winds come from the south at 18–22 mph. Gusts could reach 36 mph. Tonight’s temperature will fall to around 49.

Wednesday morning will bring a 20% chance for showers before 9 a.m. The day should become mostly sunny as the high returns only to 72 in the wake of the passing cold front. Winds will come from the southwest at 21–24 mph with gusts reaching 38 mph. Wednesday night will be partly cloudy with a low near 48. Winds will come from the west at 10–18 mph with gusts reaching 30 mph.

The remainder of the week will be sunny and cooler, with storm chances returning this weekend.
