GILLETTE, Wyo. — The Gillette VA Clinic is gearing up for flu season by offering walk-in flu clinics for veterans on Oct. 10 and 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. Both standard and high-dose vaccines will be available, with the high-dose option recommended for those 65 and older.
Enrolled veterans are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to get their flu shot. Veterans must bring their VA identification and check in at the front desk. Veterans experiencing fever, cough or other flu-like symptoms should not attend, a news release states. It’s also recommended to wear a shirt that allows easy access to the shoulder.
If veterans are unable to make it to the clinic on those dates, they can still receive a no-cost flu shot at participating community pharmacies or urgent care clinics within the VA network. A list of these locations can be found on the VA website.
The VA said it takes about two weeks for the flu shot to become fully effective. This year’s flu vaccines have been updated to protect against four different flu viruses.
Getting vaccinated helps prevent spreading the flu to others, especially vulnerable populations like young children, older adults and those with chronic health conditions. The CDC recommends that everyone six months and older get a flu shot annually, the release states.
