GILLETTE, Wyo. — The students at Rozet Elementary School will have the opportunity to participate in a popular trout-raising program next year.
In their meeting Tuesday evening, the Campbell County School Board approved the school’s application for the Trout in the Classroom program, created through a partnership between Wyoming Game and Fish and Trout Unlimited.
The approval was included in the meeting’s consent agenda, which was approved with a motion from board treasurer Joseph Lawrence.
The program provides age-level curricula to educate students about trout and their lifecycle while raising trout in their own classrooms. When the fish have reached maturity, they are released into approved local fisheries. The meeting documents did not indicate which grades at Rozet would be applying for the program, but the curriculum is available for all grades K–12. The deadline for application is Sept. 30.
The semester-long program also teaches students about how water quality is important for wild trout and conservation principles. The annual release day drew over 1,000 students from over two dozen schools this year.
