GILLETTE, Wyo. — An application window for a national writing fellowship will remain open until November, according to the Wyoming Arts Council.
As of Sept. 6, the WAC is accepting applications for the 2025 Pattie Layser Greater Yellowstone Creative Writing and Journalism Fellowship, per a Sept. 6 release.
“This annual prestigious fellowship of $3,500 is a national call open to creative writers (poetry, fiction, and nonfiction) and journalists (writer, photojournalist, videographer, documentary filmmaker, online or print media) who demonstrate serious inquiry and dedication to the Greater Yellowstone region through their work,” the WAC says.
Established authors and journalists are actively sought for the fellowship, though emerging and mid-career writers are encouraged to apply, per the WAC, which says Wyoming residency is not a requirement.
The fellowship recipient will be expected to create or complete a relevant publishable or produced work and may be requested or encouraged to make public presentations, the WAC says.
In addition to the monetary reward, fellowship recipients may elect to receive a one-week housing residency at one of several prearranged locations in the Greater Yellowstone region. The residency will be based on availability and will be negotiated with the fellowship recipient, per the WAC.
According to the WAC, the fellowship looks to intersect science, education, current events and conservation to highlight the Greater Yellowstone’s natural history and singular importance to society through creative and exceptional writing and subject communication.
Kelsey K. Sather, a Montana writer and director of the Biocene Foundation, will serve as one of two jurors. Her work includes “Birth of Anima” and “Ancient Language of the Earth.”
Jim Robbins, a former New York Times contributor and Montana resident, has been chosen as the second juror. His work focuses on science and environmental issues, including frequent contributions to the Yale Forestry School environmental journalism website “E360” and other publications.
According to WAC, the application deadline is Nov. 1 and applications may be submitted online.
