CASPER, Wyo. — The Wyoming Department of Transportation said it will reopen U.S. Highway 26/287 along Togwotee Pass on Friday at 7 a.m. The road was closed earlier this week as the Fish Creek Fire burning in the Bridger-Teton National Forest moved close to the highway.
Crews will lead motorists through the area west of Dubois along the highway where the fire has been most active, WYDOT said in a release.
“WYDOT’s Dubois maintenance crew will be piloting traffic through the fire between milepost 26 and milepost 29.8 [Friday] from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” said maintenance supervisor Mike Hitshew in the release. “This area is near the Fremont–Teton county line.” WYDOT crews will be looking for traffic hazards due to the fire throughout the day, they said.
If conditions stay favorable, they expect the road to stay open through the weekend.
The Fish Creek Fire was started by lightning earlier on Aug. 16 and has so far grown to some 19,000 acres. The fire is currently 59% contained, with nearly 450 crew members working the fire on the ground and from the air, according to InciWeb.
