Memory of the 8 run/walk set for Sept. 16

GILLETTE, Wyo. — The annual Memory of the 8 run/walk honoring the eight University of Wyoming cross-country runners who lost their lives in a vehicle crash is set for mid-September. 

The event is held annually in Gillette, honoring UW cross-country runners Justin M. Lambert-Belanger, Cody B. Brown, Kyle N. Johnson, Joshua D. Hones, Morgan J. McLeland, Kevin L. Salverson, Nicholas J. Schabron and Shane E. Shatto. 

All eight runners died when their vehicle was struck by a drunk driver on Sept. 16, 2001, approximately 17 miles south of Laramie on Highway 287, according to the University of Wyoming. 

In Gillette, the Memory of the 8 run serves as a reminder to the community of the dangers of impaired driving, according to the registration web page. The race commences on Monday, Sept. 16, with the starting line at M&K Oil, 901 S. 4-J Road. 

The Kids Fun Run starts at 5:15 p.m. with the 5K and 8-mile races to follow. There will be a barbecue and social to follow all races, according to an event flyer.
