Gillette may see needed rain ahead of next dry, warm spell

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Chances are Campbell County will be getting some much-need moisture today, courtesy of an upper low-pressure system that’s pushed into the region overnight.

Gillette is looking at a 30% chance for rain right off the bat, increasing to 40% after 2 p.m. Afternoon thunderstorms aren’t expected to produce much air-to-ground lightning — which has sparked several wildfires in and around Campbell County in recent weeks — but winds may pick up quite a bit from the northwest. Gusts are expected to reach 18 mph. The high today will be near 76.

A 20% chance for showers and thunderstorms will persist into the evening before skies become partly cloudy and the low falls to around 50.

Today’s rain is expected to be the last for the week. The sun returns Thursday with a high of 76. Clear skies Thursday night will allow the low to fall to around 50 as winds come from the north at 6 mph.

Friday brings more sun and warmer temps as the high climbs to around 81. Friday night skies should be clear as well. The low will be near 52, according to the forecast. Winds from the northeast will shift to come from the south overnight, reaching speeds of 6–15 mph with gusts reaching 26 mph.

The weekend promises rising temperatures as a reminder that it’s still the summer season. A sunny Saturday should see a high of 86, followed by 89 on a sunny Sunday. Saturday’s low will be near 54 while Sunday’s is expected to fall to 57.
