C17 Crime Clips for Monday, Aug. 26

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Here is a summary of notable crimes in and around Gillette this past weekend, obtained through law enforcement reports compiled by the Gillette Police Department and the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.  

Fraud, Aug. 23, Georgia Circle, GPD

A 41-year-old woman called the police at 11:25 a.m. to report her 17-year-old son had fallen for a social media scam, Gillette Police Capt. Kelly Alger said. The boy reportedly got a message on Aug. 17 from an oil painting account asking to use his face for a painting in exchange for $500. The boy agreed and provided his contact information. Shortly after, the boy got multiple emails containing checks with individual links. The boy deposited five checks into his account before the suspects asked him to send $2,500 to them. The boy didn’t send any of the money and contacted his financial institution to report the incident. As of Aug. 26, the boy is out $13, and the investigation is ongoing.

Theft of services, Aug. 23, Hidden Valley Road, GPD

Officers responded to an address on Hidden Valley Road around 11:56 a.m. Aug. 23 after city staff reported a water meter had been replaced with a pipe, allowing access to the city’s water supply, Alger said. The water meter was removed earlier this year between January and March. As of Aug. 26, officers have not been able to determine how much water has been taken.

Fraud, Aug. 23, Bay Avenue, GPD

A 32-year-old man called the police from Bay Avenue on Friday around 2:32 p.m. to report fraudulent charges on his debit card, Alger said. The man said his card was taken from his Ford Taurus after he lent it to a 33-year-old woman. He received notifications from his financial institution regarding $224 in charges. During the investigation, officers were able to obtain surveillance of a red-haired woman wearing a Dr. Pepper shirt and pink shorts using the man’s card at a local store checkout. The woman has not been identified, and the investigation continues.

Crash, Aug. 23, Highway 14-16, CCSO

A 16-year-old girl was taken to the hospital after reportedly rolling her 2008 Honda CR-V on Highway 14-16 around 5:18 p.m., Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds said. The girl rolled her vehicle after swerving to avoid hitting a fox.

DWUI, Aug. 23, North Highway 59, CCSO

Deputies responded to North Highway 59 Friday evening after firefighters called to report a potentially intoxicated motorist, Reynolds said. They located the motorist, a 43-year-old man, heading toward Montana and stopped him for speeding. The man was found to be intoxicated and was arrested for felony DWUI.

Aggravated assault, Aug. 24, Lexington Avenue, GPD

Officers arrested a 24-year-old man for felony aggravated assault and domestic violence following a nearly four-hour standoff on Lexington Avenue on Saturday, Alger said. According to the report, the man threatened his 48-year-old mother with a knife. GPD’s Special Response Team, detectives and drone team responded to the scene, kicking off the standoff around 10:37 a.m. The standoff ended around 2:20 p.m. with the man’s surrender.

Dog bite, Aug. 25, Hannum Road, GPD

A 55-year-old woman and her 6-year-old sheepdog received medical treatment after they were attacked by two pit bulls at the dog park on Hannum Road around 2:40 p.m. Aug. 25, Alger said. The pit bulls were owned by a 60-year-old woman, one of which bit the woman on her hand. Both pit bulls were transported to animal control for quarantine.

Auto theft, Aug. 25, Moran Ranch Road, CCSO

A 47-year-old man called the sheriff’s office at 7:06 p.m. to report his 2004 Honda CRF-450 stolen from Moran Ranch Road, Reynolds said. The man said his son was operating the dirt bike when the engine died. The son left the bike on the side of the roadway and returned home. When the 47-year-old man went to retrieve the dirt bike later, it was no longer there. The investigation is ongoing.
