LARAMIE, Wyo. — Following a 3–0 loss to South Dakota State during the first home game of the 2024 season, the University of Wyoming Women’s Soccer Team is now 0–2–1.
From the beginning of regulation, the South Dakota State Jackrabbits outperformed the Pokes in multiple categories. Sixteen total shots and nine corners from the Jackrabbits compared to 10 and four from the Pokes meant that South Dakota found its way to more efficient scoring opportunities. The final box score of 3–0 for the Jackrabbits reflects that.
Despite the loss, Wyoming’s defense continues to stand out. Wyoming keeper Haley Bartel completed five saves — two more than she allowed to go into the net.
That same hustle is also what earned the Cowgirls a shutout tie Aug. 15 against the University of Washington and, before that, a shutout victory of 1–0 against Brigham Young University during an exhibition game Aug. 9.
However, in the three in-season games Wyoming has now played, the ball has only found its way into the net in the Cowgirls’ favor once. That goal came during a 1–5 loss to the University of Colorado Boulder from a penalty kick by Rock Springs’ Alyssa Bedard.
Wyoming’s Raegan Richardson and Taylor Brook led the team offensively this time, with each taking two shots. However, 10 total shots from Wyoming became 10 total saves for Jackrabbit keepers Emma Knack and Stephanie Leckwold.
Wyoming will need to pick up the pace offensively before its next bout, this time against the 0–3 University of Northern Colorado Bears Thursday, Sept. 5. Wyoming’s next home game will be played against the 2–1 University of Montana on Sunday, Sept. 8.
