Area wildfires cause evacuations, interstate and road closures

(Mary Stroka/County 17)

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Multiple evacuation notices have been sent and multiple roadways have been closed due to burning wildfires in and around Campbell County.

Campbell County Emergency Management says the Bureau of Land Management and Campbell County Fire have ordered the immediate evacuation and closure of the Weston Hills Recreation Area in northern Campbell County. This is due to the rapid movement of the Constitution fire, identified near Collins Road, north of the Eagle Butte Mine, in the fire department’s press release.

Around 7 p.m., the fire was estimated to be about 3,000 acres.

Campbell County Emergency Management also said that at the request of Johnson County Fire Command, the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents from Interstate 90 north to the Sheridan County line and living within 10 miles of the Johnson County–Campbell County line to evacuate because of a fire in eastern Johnson County, which jumped the interstate and is moving in that direction.

At 10:26 p.m., Campbell County Emergency Management issued the following update:

CAMPBELLCOWY: The pre-evacuation alert due to threatening wildfires has now been extended to the rural subdivisions south of I-90 and west of Gillette.

Campbell County Emergency Management / Wyoming Department of Transportation

At 10:56 p.m., the fire department extended the pre-evacuation for everything north of Rawhide Mine to Horse Creek between Highway 14-16 and pointing east.

It was announced that CAM-PLEX is opening horse stalls for evacuees.

Additionally, the Wyoming Department of Transportation has closed I-90 from the Johnson County–Campbell County line to Gillette. Wyoming Highway 59 also is shut down between mile marker 126 and the Montana state line. As of 10:45 p.m., there is no estimated reopening time.
