GILLETTE, Wyo. — Ongoing public safety concerns have prompted the Wyoming Department of Transportation to lower the Highway 50 speed limit between Westover Road and Lakeway Road from 55 mph to 45 mph.

According to WYDOT, a request to lower the speed limit on Highway 50 — also known as Skyline Drive — specifically at the Boxelder Road intersection was driven by safety concerns expressed by citizens, local elected officials and the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

“The concern was that the current speed limit of 55 mph was not appropriate and was creating a safety issue,” WYDOT said in an Aug. 13 release, adding that the concerns prompted a traffic study of the entire 55 mph zone from mile marker 1.80 to 2.90 to determine an appropriate speed.

Per WYDOT, the study indicated that reducing the speed limit from 55 mph to 45 mph from Westover Road to Force Road would improve the safety of the route and address the public’s concerns.

New speed limit signs will be placed the week of Aug. 19 accompanied by warning flags to aid in bringing awareness to the speed limit change, WYDOT says.
