GILLETTE, Wyo. — Not much has changed in the weekend forecast for Gillette from the National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota, except a slight bump in storm chances this afternoon and tonight.
Kicking off from an 8 a.m. 55 degrees, Gillette should see a high today of 77 under mostly sunny skies. Between noon and 3 p.m., storm chances will begin to increase and rise to 70%. Some of the storms may be severe, the forecast warns.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of Campbell County in a Level 1 of 5 risk for severe weather. The main hazards will be strong wind and large hail along with occasional heavy rain.
Winds today will come from the south at 5–10 mph and then shift to the east this afternoon as the storms roll in. Gusts could reach 17 mph. Wind speeds won’t change much into the evening as storm chances ramp up to 80%. After midnight, storm chances fall to 50%. The low will be near 53.
Sunday will start with a 50% chance for thunderstorms. Despite southerly winds of 8–13 mph, the high will max out around 74. The day will be mostly sunny when it’s not storming. Clouds should clear out by evening, leaving a mostly clear night sky and a low of 50 degrees.
That clearing will be the beginning of a system that will return summertime heat to Campbell County.
Monday will be mostly sunny with a high of 80, followed by 86 on Tuesday, 83 on Wednesday and 81 on Thursday. Friday should see a high of 84. Lows will be the mid-50s.
