C17 Crime Clips for Thursday, Aug. 8

GILLETTE, Wyo. – Here is a summary of notable crimes in and around Gillette yesterday, Aug. 7, obtained through law enforcement reports compiled by the Gillette Police Department and the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.  

Trespassing, Aug. 7, East Laramie Street, GPD

Officers responded to East Laramie Street at 6:26 a.m. for a report of a man refusing to exit a woman’s vehicle, Gillette Deputy Police Chief Brent Wasson said. A 29-year-old woman had reportedly allowed the father of her children, a 37-year-old man, to stay with her for the night. The man agreed to leave in a vehicle with the mother and children. He then refused to get out of the vehicle until officers arrived. At the woman’s request, the man was trespassed from her residence.

Protection order violation, Aug. 7, Reata Drive, GPD

A 41-year-old man was arrested for violating a protection order after a 40-year-old woman called to report he attempted to contact her at the 2024 International Pathfinder Camporee around 10:43 a.m., Wasson said. The order prohibited the man from being within 1,000 feet of the woman and her children.

Fraud, Aug. 7, Rockpile Avenue, GPD

A 70-year-old woman called the police at 11:40 a.m. to report being targeted by fraud on Rockpile Avenue, Wasson said. The woman said she got a fraudulent email from an organization posing as her antivirus software informing her of a recent $569.99 charge. She called the number provided and was refunded $30,000. A man claiming affiliation with a financial institution instructed her to send back $29,400. The woman sent $27,100 to the man through a Bitcoin machine in Spearfish, South Dakota, before being stopped. The investigation is ongoing.

Found property, Aug. 7, South Garner Lake Road, GPD

Officers responded to a fueling station on South Garner Lake Road for a report of a handgun lying in a parking lot around 12:37 p.m., Wasson said. A 32-year-old man reportedly found the handgun and picked it up before officers arrived. He turned over the weapon, a .22 caliber handgun, which was logged for safe keeping.

Accidental discharge, Aug. 7, Stanley Avenue, GPD

A 30-year-old man called the police at 1:14 p.m. after accidentally discharging his Mossberg 30-06 caliber rifle inside his home on Stanley Avenue, Wasson said. The man said the round exited out his back door, but officers were not able to find any places it impacted.

Theft, Aug. 7, Kingsbury Road, CCSO

Deputies responded to the area of Kingsbury Road and Montgomery Road after a 63-year-old man called to report missing pipe around 1:36 p.m., Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds said. The man said he was missing several hundred feet of two-and-three-eighths-inch pipe valued between $25,200 and $31,500. There are no suspects, and the investigation is ongoing.

REDDI, Aug. 7, Highway 14-16, GPD

Officers responded to a report of a vehicle crashing into a liquor store on Highway 14-16 around 10:20 p.m., Wasson said. The report indicated an intoxicated man drove a white Subaru into the front entrance of the building. Officers located the vehicle on Boxelder Road near Butler Spaeth Road and attempted to stop it near Cliff Davis Drive. The vehicle entered a fueling station parking lot and fled north on South Douglas Highway at a high rate of speed. Officers chose not to pursue the vehicle but were able to positively identify the license plate through video footage. The driver has not been located as of Aug. 8. The damage to the building was estimated at over $1,000, and the investigation is ongoing.
