Wright Town Council Candidate Questionnaire: Doug Schrader

(Doug Schrader)

GILLETTE, Wyo. — The 2024 election season is well underway, and County 17 has sent a list of questions to each candidate who has filed to run for a municipal office.

These questions are designed to give readers a better understanding of the people behind the names on the ballot. Except for minor grammar editing and clarifications, all candidate responses submitted to County 17 are republished as they are received.

Below, get to know Doug Schrader, who is running for a seat on the Wright Town Council:

Who are you?

My Name is Doug Schrader. I am a Wyoming native. I grew up in Southeast Wyoming on a small farming and ranching operation. I attended and graduated from the University of Wyoming and started teaching at Wright in 1991. I have since spent 33 years as a math teacher at Wright Junior/Senior High School only recently retiring.

Why have you chosen to run for office and what do you hope to accomplish should you be elected?

I have chosen to run for office to see progress and the completion of the various projects that I have been a part of for the past 8 years on the Wright Town Council. I hope to continue to improve the choices and lifestyles for Wright residents. There are many day-to-day projects that make Wright a great place to live and I will continue them as well. I would also like to explore options for affordable housing to allow the Town of Wright to continue to grow and prosper.

How do you plan on accomplishing your goals?

Through planning for future projects in Wright as well as exploring all grants and funding available for the development of our town.

What about you, or your experiences, would make you a good steward of taxpayer dollars and a good representative of your community?

I believe that every tax dollar should be spent in a manner that provides a maximum benefit to our citizens. My experience on the council has provided me with the insight to get matching grants and to stretch our dollars. I also believe spending money in a responsible manner is necessary for the growth and benefit of our community.

What major issues do you feel are prevalent in your community and how do you plan to address them?

We are currently experiencing, like many communities, a lack of affordable housing. I think affordable housing is imperative for the Town of Wright to grow and strive. I also think our economy is very energy-dependent and ever-changing, and this is why there is a need to find and promote opportunities outside of the energy sector as well as to support energy in every way possible.
