CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Two wildfires, the Pleasant Valley and Haystacks Fires, have merged, threatening communities in Platte and Goshen counties. The fires now cover approximately 30,000 acres. Despite the size of the fires, no homes or structures have been lost as of Wednesday morning, July 31, according to an announcement by the Governor’s Office.

In response to the fires, the communities of Hartville and Pleasant Valley have been evacuated. Evacuees are currently supported at Camp Guernsey. Residents in need of support are encouraged to contact the American Red Cross of Wyoming.

The Wyoming National Guard has opened Camp Guernsey to provide shelter for those affected by the fires. Evacuees seeking shelter should go to the front gate of Camp Guernsey to begin the process.

Firefighters from the county, state and Bureau of Land Management — including single-engine airtankers, helicopters, heavy airtankers, engines and hand crews — are battling the fires. Additional suppression resources are arriving today to assist in the effort.

Governor Mark Gordon announced that FEMA has authorized federal funds to help with firefighting costs following a request from the state.

Highway 26 is currently closed from Lingle to Interstate 25. Highway 270 is also closed from Highway 26 at Guernsey to Highway 20 in Manville, according to an announcement by the Governor’s Office. These closures are in place to ensure the safety of the public and to facilitate firefighting efforts.

One fire began a few days ago due to a lightning strike north of the Camp Guernsey training area. Initially, it was almost out, but the heat index and wind reignited the flames, according to a press release by the Wyoming Military Department.

Local fire departments from Camp Guernsey, Torrington and Wheatland are working together to combat the blaze. The efforts of these departments, combined with federal support, are working to manage the fire and protect threatened communities.

Residents of Hartville, Guernsey and Fort Laramie are advised to stay informed and be prepared for potential evacuation orders. The situation remains dynamic, and authorities are working tirelessly to control the fires and ensure public safety.
