Campbell County Commissioner Butch Knutson resigns

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Campbell County Commissioner Butch Knutson has sent in a letter of resignation effective today, Aug. 1, the Board of Commissioners announced in a press release.

Knutson’s letter gave no details on the resignation, but clarified his decision to resign was due to unforeseen circumstances. His resignation creates a vacant seat, which kicks state procedure for filling the vacancy into motion.

According to the press release, the Campbell County Republican Party, which Knutson was a part of, has been notified of his resignation. To comply with state statutes, the party is now responsible for finding and nominating three qualified applicants to fill the seat.

The applicants will be serving the completion of Knutson’s original term through 2026, with the option to run again for a full term in 2027. Once they are submitted, the Board has 20 days to make their selection for his replacement. If unable to come to a consensus, the selection will made by district court judge, according to the release.
