Cool front brings dip in temps that won’t last long

GILLETTE, Wyo. — One day after the mercury touched 102 degrees, things will be quite a bit cooler.

The dangerously high temperatures on Thursday will cool to a much more tolerable 84 degrees today, according to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota. That’s courtesy of a weak cool front that’s blanketed the region. Today will also come with a 20% chance for thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Skies otherwise will be mostly sunny, and winds will come from the northwest at 9–15 mph.

Tonight will see that storm chance rise to 30% as the low drops to 60. Skies will again fill with the haze of Canadian and area wildfires overnight, leading into a mostly sunny Saturday. The high will be 91 ahead of a 30% chance of thunderstorms Saturday evening. The low will drop to around 58.

The cool air won’t last long, but long enough to limit Sunday’s high to around 86, according to the forecast. There’ll be a 20% chance for thunderstorms after noon, but drier air will prevail by nightfall. A mostly clear Sunday night should see a low near 59.

Things are going to warm up again, and continue trending warmer. Monday will be sunny with a high of 93, followed by 95 on a sunny Tuesday. Wednesday’s temps will dip a bit to 88 before rising again to 92 on Thursday.

Beyond that, Gillette is looking at drier and warmer conditions than normal well into August.
