GILLETTE, Wyo.— A red flag warning has been issued for all of Campbell County by the National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota. In effect until 11 p.m. Thursday, the NWS in Rapid City warns that a combination of weather factors in the area have created critical fire conditions.
The heat, expected to top out at 104 degrees, in combination with other factors like dry vegetation, wind and risk of thunderstorms, create heightened risk for fire. The high temperatures have also led the NWS in Rapid City to issue a heat advisory until 9 p.m. Thursday night.
The red flag warning stretches across most of eastern and central Wyoming and north into Montana, also touching both Dakotas and parts of western Nebraska.
The NWS in Rapid City said in a graphic posted to its X account that those living in areas under the warning should not burn outdoors, discard cigarettes out the windows of a moving car or drive over dry grass. “Don’t be an ignition source,” the agency wrote.
