GILLETTE, Wyo. — A Gillette man will spend the next decade in prison following his recent sentencing in federal court for drug and firearm possession, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Giovanny Bustamante Ibarra, 21, of Gillette, was sentenced to 125 months in prison on July 22 for possession with intent to distribute cocaine and carrying firearms during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime, the U.S. Attorney’s Office says.
The charges stem from a Feb. 28 incident where Bustamante Ibarra was found with 491 grams of suspected cocaine, three rifles, two handguns and a handgun suppressor during a traffic stop on a 2011 Hyundai with expired registration, per the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
During the stop, a Wyoming Highway Patrol drug dog indicated on the vehicle, which ultimately led to the search that uncovered the drugs and weapons. One handgun was loaded and readily accessible next to the driver’s seat, the U.S. Attorney’s Office says.
Bustamante Ibarra allegedly claimed ownership of the cocaine and weapons; he also admitted in a later interview that he intended to sell the cocaine in Gillette. He was charged in early March and indicted by a federal grand jury on March 13, pleading guilty before U.S. District Court Judge Alan B. Johnson on April 25.
Per the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the crime was investigated by the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
