GILLETTE, Wyo. — The National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota, has issued a fire weather watch for Campbell County and the surrounding area starting Thursday.

According to the NWS in Rapid City, the watch will take effect Thursday afternoon, July 25, due to the potential of critical fire conditions created by an upper-level ridge forecast to bring hot temperatures and very dry relative humidities this week.

The ridge is expected to break down on Friday, July 26, though the pre-fontal environment will be hot and dry with gusty winds. High-based thunderstorms are possible over northeastern Wyoming on Thursday evening with the potential for dry lightning.

“Minimum relative humidities will drop to 9–15% Thursday afternoon and evening over northeastern Wyoming and parts of western South Dakota,” the NWS in Rapid City said, adding that additional thunderstorms are possible Friday with little beneficial rainfall.

Critical fire weather conditions are likely Thursday and may extend into Friday east of the Black Hills depending on the timing of the cold front, according to NWS in Rapid City.
